Multimap logo Multimap Implementation Guidelines - Countries and States

Introduction

This document gives details of how Multimap services handle the names and internationally-recognized encoded abbreviations of different countries and, where applicable, those countries' states, provinces, territories and territorial authorities. This country- and state-related information is typically passed to Multimap as address parameters in URLs.

Please note that, although most Multimap services are not case-sensitive with regard to their parameters, some require parameters for country and state codes to be in upper case. Each Multimap service to which this rule applies contains a note to that effect in its individual Implementation Guidelines documentation.

ISO Country Codes

Multimap recognizes countries by their unique two-character International Organization for Standardization (ISO) country code. Please follow the ISO standards when specifying country codes in any Multimap parameters.

You can access the full ISO list of country codes on the ISO website.

Some Multimap services also recognize countries by their official names and even common abbreviations or alternatives, such as "United States" for the United States of America. For examples of this, please see the Implementation Guidelines documentation for your individual Multimap service(s).

States (Including Provinces, Territories and Territorial Authorities)

To specify addresses in countries with states, provinces, territories or territorial authorities, please include the state parameter in your code. This currently applies to five countries:

Multimap services use the ISO abbreviation codes for provinces in Canada and states in Australia and Malaysia, and Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) codes for states in the United States.

Some Multimap services (such as the Multimap API) accept the region parameter as an alternative to state.
The countries listed in this section are the only countries for which Multimap is able to geocode addresses based on the value of the state or region parameters: it is not possible to provide accurate geocoding results based on regional denominations in other countries (such as counties in Great Britain), although customers of those Multimap business services that allow the upload of store records may define such parameters within their own services and then filter their records based on those parameters.
