Multimap Helps Sport Relief Show Thousands the Way to a Brighter Future
Multimap, Europe's leading online mapping provider, has joined forces with Sport Relief ’04 to support the
fundraising campaign, raising cash for people in the UK and in some of the poorest countries around the world.
Multimap is providing free online mapping services to users of www.sportrelief.com to enable participants and
spectators, of what is likely to be the biggest Mile event in history, to find their nearest Mile, and to map
their route to it. Multimap is also providing printed maps of 114 routes to participants; each receives a map
of the route on the back of their runner number.
To access the mapping functionality, users of www.sportrelief.com click on the “get involved”
tab at the top of the homepage, followed by the “do the Mile” tab, and then the “Find Location”
link to the left of the screen. They can then search a list of all the events, using the UK map
that appears before them with icons representing the fourteen biggest runs, or they can scroll to
find out the local event nearest them.
When users register for a Mile, to locate their nearest local run, they simply enter their postcode,
and the application delivers a list of the nearest five venues. Users click on a link of the venue of
interest to access details of the event, a map of the route, a key of the facilities available, and further
details. Next, they may either search for another venue, or proceed to complete the registration process.
Willem Mijnarends, Multimap’s Sales Manager UK said, "By making it quick and easy for users of the
site to see the location their nearest “Go the Extra Mile” venue, whether they plan to take part or simply
watch, we are helping to get more people along to the events, raising awareness of the campaign, and
contributing to its overall success. We are delighted to support such a worthwhile initiative!”
Commenting on the partnership, Martin Gill, New Media Manager, at Comic Relief said, “We cannot
underestimate the part that technology partners like Multimap play in the success of Sport Relief ‘04.
Our website is a key marketing and awareness-building tool, and serves as the primary source of information
and registration for people interested in participating. As such, it’s vitally important that participants
can use it to find detailed information about their chosen event venue, and access an accurate map. With
over 100 million hits expected before the July 10th, we needed a mapping partner we could rely on 24/7,
regardless of traffic volumes; Multimap was the obvious choice and we thank the company for its
contribution to the success of the campaign.”
